One day in 1988 a local builder, Paul Lincoln, drove past the upturned concrete base of a Nissen Hut. In the underside he recognised the tyre tracks of an American lorry hat had driven over the ground just before the concrete was poured. Don Macfarlane remembers: On 17th May, 1940, twelve aircraft of 82 Squadron, based at Watton, in Norfolk, took off to attack troop concentrations at Gembloux, Belgium, where the German army was sweeping West towards the Channel ports. Eleven of them were shot down and the survivor, badly damaged, managed to reach Watton, but it was written off due to the damage sustained. In 2003 local man Frank Hurrell filmed around the camp a little before it was finally sold off and the final chapter of its life was played out. It is presented here exactly as Frank edited it and is a record of a sad end to the life of a wonderful station. We are grateful to Frank’s widow for allowing us to include the video here.
By June 1970, it was known that facilities for EWSW/SARL would be ready at RAF Wyton during the first quarter of 1971and preparations for the move began in earnest.
